A word is anything between spaces with a letter or number ("well-known" is one word, as in Microsoft Word). Characters are counted as you see them, so Tamil and Hindi count correctly. Reading time uses 238 words a minute and speaking time 183, the adult averages from a 2019 review of 190 studies. Your text is never saved or sent.

- Does it count Tamil and Hindi words correctly?
- Yes. Words are counted between spaces, as in English, and characters are counted the way you see them: a Tamil letter with its vowel sign is one character. Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, are not counted correctly.
- Characters with or without spaces: which one does my form want?
- If the form says "characters", it usually means with spaces. Some forms, especially for scholarships, say "without spaces". The counter shows both.
- How long is a 1500-word essay?
- About 6 minutes to read silently and about 8 minutes to read aloud, at average reading speeds. On paper it is roughly 3 pages single-spaced or 6 pages double-spaced at 12 pt.
